PEARL JAM - LIVE CD FROM TORONTO

By: David Visschedyk

When I was younger I used to go to concerts religiously. There was nothing better for a sixteen year old than driving into the big city to see a band that you'd only heard once but you knew were ‘loud'. As I've gotten older, I've gone to fewer and fewer concerts, but those that I do attend, are usually quality shows.

The last amazing show I went to was Pearl Jam, in Toronto in 2000. The show was amazing; anytime I think back I wind up smiling like a mad man, thinking about the amazing music and the great experience I had that night. Recently, Pearl Jam–in conjunction with Sony Music–released live discs for every show on their North American tour. This means that I can go out and buy the West Palm Beach shows, which my friend Jen told me were amazing. No longer a slave to bootleg traders, the band has graciously provided fans with quality recordings of all of their shows.

In retrospect, I shouldn't have been as excited as I was to hear the Toronto show. Like that girlfriend you broke up with three years ago, I can only remember the good things about the show; all the little annoyances, the off-notes, the songs played that I just don't like, have been erased from my memory of the show. This is probably the best thing. When I got the two-disc cd I knew that I had made a mistake. For the rest of my life (or as long as CD's are the format of choice), I will have to remember the mistakes at the concert. There weren't many, but the few errors are a constant reminder that this is a live show.

The Toronto CD is amazing, the sound is better than I've heard in many live cd's, in fact the sound is better than I heard sitting in the arena. I would recommend to everyone that if they have never heard Pearl Jam live, they should go out and randomly select a concert, and listen to it at home with their eyes closed. You'll feel like you sitting there watching the band. That said, I would recommend to anyone that has seen a show on their last tour, to buy CDs from other dates. Not only will you be able to hear what they heard in Boise or Seattle, but you'll be able to keep your own memory of how you were lucky enough to go to the best show on the tour.
