DRINKING GAMES

By: David Visschedyk

If you read what I said in my review of AtomFilms, about how with independent directors and actors it is easy to be scared to invest time in watching films, you'll know that I was bound to have to eat my words. Recently IndieDVD (http://www.indiedvd.com) send us their first feature length DVD release, "Drinking Games". This movie was great, better than most films you see staring some shite Hollywood actor.

The movie focuses on six friends who just returned from burying another close friend. The movie watches these six deal with their emotions in a night of drinking and talking. These are the films that independents do better than Hollywood, movies where you learn about the characters not by them shooting each other, but by talking. The script, written by Joseph Lawson is both funny and heart-warming a lot better than whoever wrote Battlefield Earth.

Of course, there are some problems. The story does seem to slow in the middle, and the ending is a little cliché, but no matter what, this is a strong film. I laughed a lot, and in parts it reminded me of Clerks, but with a lot more heart.

There isn't much to say about this film, I've found a new director that I will pay close attention to in Lawson, and if you have the chance, check this film out. You won't be disappointed.
